Costa Rica is one of the best destinations for recreational fishing. In fact, this Central American country has been awarded with some world fishing records, as it offers an ample diversity of fishing types.
The fact that Costa Rica is bathed both by the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean cannot be overlooked. In the Caribbean coast, the most relevant site for fishing is Barra del Colorado National Refuge, where it is possible to hire a boat and go fishing sharks.
Lots of Guanacaste’s beaches are ideal for fishing too, for example, Playa Coco Beach, Playa Junquillal Beach, and Playa Flamingo Beach. In the latter, a very popular fishing contest takes place; off-shore fishing of sailfish.
In the Central Pacific area there are lots of small-scale fisheries located in the various islands scattered by the coast, for example, Isla Venado and Isla Chira islands. On the other hand, Isla Palo Seco beach is an interesting spot to fish sea basses, snappers, and groupers; and also Manuel Antonio and Quepos are ideal fishing sites, since their waters are calm and inhabited by big fish species, for example, swordfishes, mackerels, etc. Recreational fishing is one of the most exciting activities that can be practiced in this area.
In the Southern Pacific area, the most important fishing spots are Golfito and Osa, over all Zancudo and Sirena beaches. Other important areas are Ciudad Cortés, Bahía Drake, and Golfito Delfín.
But there is also the opportunity to practice recreational fishing in the inland of Costa Rica. In the Northern Plains, in La Fortuna de San Carlos, it is possible to fish in the rivers, and also in the Central Valley, in San Gerardo de Dota, it is possible to fish trouts in the Savegre River and Pirris River.
