Alajuela is the capital city of the province with the same name. It is the country’s second largest city, after San Jose, from which Alajuela is just 11 miles away. In addition, it is less than 2 miles away from the airport, so this city can perfectly fit as the starting point of your vacation in Costa Rica.
This city has an interesting colonial past related to the coffee crops that surround it. Even though it is not one of the country’s most tourist areas, it holds several attractions that make it worthwhile to visit.
Alajuela is proud to be the birthplace of the national hero Juan Santamaria, who had a prominent role in the war against William Walker and his freebooters. This war was fought in the mid 19th century in Central America. You can learn everything about him by visiting the Juan Santamaria Park, a space dedicated to him where an sculpture that depicts his figure stands, just in the middle of the park; and you can recall his brave heroic deeds in the museum that is located inside an historical building near Central Park. This park is the usual meeting point for Alajuela’s people and an extraordinary place to rest under the shadows of mango trees surrounded by beautiful colonial buildings.
The architectonic heritage is also exceptionally represented in the city, both by civil buildings, like the Town’s Theater, as by religious ones, like the Agony Church and Alajuela’s Cathedral, which red dome is the city’s proud symbol.
