The Osa Canton is located in South Pacific, in Puntarenas province, bordered to the north with the tourist Quepos Canton.
This canton is composed of six districts: Palmar —the one with higher commercial and infrastructural development and growth—, Sierpe, Piedras Blancas, Bahía Ballena, Bahía Drake and Puerto Cortés, being the city of the latter the capital of the canton.
The “Osa” name comes from the Osa chief, who ruled the Térrabas amerindians, those who, at the beginning of the Conquest, inhabited what they called “Golfo Dosa”, currently known as Golfo Dulce Gulf.
The economy of the country is mainly based on the agricultural industry, specifically on the rice processing and packaging industry, in addition to tourism, a strong economic component, in the Osa Canton. This place is an attractive tourist destination in Southern Costa Rica due to the variety of leisure activities that can be practiced there and the incomparable tropical landscapes and sublime beaches, which make the entire Costa Rica an enticing tourist destination.
Among the aforementioned activities, its festivities stand out, such as the Festival de la Luz, which takes place the first Saturday of December; the Festival de las Esferas, held in Palmar Sur around 21 March, having the pre-Columbian spheres as theme; the Festival Ballenas y Delfines, celebrated during the first and second weekends of September in Bahía Ballenas to promote tourism; the Fiestas de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes in Puerto Cortés, where numerous leisure activities are offered, like bullfighting, mechanical games, dancing, singing contests, and many more; the Festival de la Luna Llena, held at midnight in Bahía Drake in honor of the Moon and Ocean spirits; and the Winter Solstice, celebrated on 21 December by the Bruncas. The latter is the shortest day of the year, when legend has it that the line between the natural and spiritual worlds fades out; this is, spirits can cross to our world and take whatever souls they like, existing, then, Good and Evil spirits, of Nature and Darkness.
The canton also has an important Costa Rican Second Division football team, the Municipal Osa, whose headquarters are located in Ciudad Cortés. Furthermore, other sports events are held in this canton, such as motocross races in Palmar District or surfing, recreational fishing, scuba diving, swimming competitions and several water sports in coastal areas.
Come and see the marvelous Osa Canton, where you will find amazing natural parks like the Corcovado National Park, the Marino Ballena National Park, the Punta Río Claro National Wildlife Refuge and many natural reserves and astonishing beaches which offer an incomparable scenic beauty.
