Tortuguero National Park, in Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, was opened in 1970 to protect green sea turtle’s reproduction areas (it is an endangered species) by establishing a marine habitat of 46950.4 acres.
Apart from green sea turtles, there live more than 60 mammal species like jaguars, alligators and crocodiles. But the most important are the manatees, an endangered species, that dwells in Tortuguero; it is an exceptional place to go bird-watching as there live more than 300 bird species such as parrots, toucans and hawks which are an endemic and migratory species.
You must take into account that in this national park nature conservation is very important, so if you visit it between March and October, when it is turtle’s nesting period, you must go there by boat with a tourist guide, so you can observe turtles away from riversides. Remember that you are visiting the wettest area in the country with a very high pluvial index so the best months to visit this area are February, April, and November, when there are less precipitations and you can contemplate better its 11 natural habitats.
The park’s activity offer is wide and funny. Visitors can visit El Cerro, a little hill in the national park’s vast territory; go by boat through its numerous channels to contemplate its different woods; or if you prefer it, travel by kayak and climbing while doing the Canopy Tour. Also, the Turtle’s Museum is a must-see place to know better the relation between this village and the sea turtles
