The biological station “La Selva” is a natural area which is part of the OTS (Organization for Tropical Studies). It is located in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, in the province of Heredia, in the Central Volcanic Mountain Range and bordering Braulio Carrillo National Park. This biological station is a must-see place if you finally decide to visit this region of Costa Rica or if you want to make tropical scientific researches.
The reserve has an extension of 5.8 square miles. It is mainly composed of rainy forests packed with exotic fauna: lots of venomous frogs, hundreds of butterfly species, leafcutter ants, jaguars, mountain lions, monkeys, etc. One of the main attractions in the reserve is bird-watching, since hundreds of birds inhabit it, both resident and migratory. Regarding its flora, the biological station has more than 1000 tree species. Besides, this reserve has more than 31 miles of paths that lead to its different habitats, both terrestrial and aquatic.
Since it is a research center, the majority of its facilities are dedicated to scientific research and, specially, to physiological ecology, forestry, and soil investigation. It has several laboratories with the best equipments to work in situ. And also, because of its scientific purpose, the access to it is limited: only 80 persons are allowed per day. The general public can visit it (with a previous appointment), but students and scientifics have preference over them. For the visits, it offers lodging at comfortable barracks, as well as a dining room.
In their website you can find a user guide where everything visitors must know is explained.
