Santa Barbara is the capital city of a canton with the same name, in the province of Heredia. This city is the perfect place to go if you are looking for some rest and and you want to stay away from the crowded tourist destinations of Costa Rica.

Their economy is mainly based on livestock and agriculture, specially on coffee and sugarcane plantations. The city offers visitors a beautiful rural setting where they can relax and connect with Costa Rica’s most genuine way of life.

One of the best options to enjoy this charming city is to take a quiet and romantic horseback ride by the beautiful mountains that surround. That way you will discover the astonishing rural setting where it is located. You can also enjoy this wonderful place by hiking the several paths that go deep into the purest nature and that will lead you to incredible waterfalls.

If you are searching something more of an adventure, you could take a tour to Braulio Carrillo National Park and admire the Barva Volcano; or visit the surprising Central Volcanic Mountain Range Forest Reserve.

And, of course, you cannot leave the city without visiting the giant Iglesia de Santa Barbara Church, the most important worship center of the province of Heredia and a pilgrimage destination for lots of Costa Ricans.
