Rara Avis is a very famous and incredible virgin tropical jungle region which borders Braulio Carrillo National Park, in the province of Heredia. It is located on one of the Chato Volcano hillsides, at 2300 feet above sea level, and it occupies more or less 4 square miles.
This reserve was founded with only one purpose: to boost eco-friendly tourism. It has to be borne in mind that the area’s nature and agriculture has to be well conserved, so their main aim is to raise awareness about the environment’s sustainability. Besides, some scientific researches are being carried out there, thus the area has a modern investigation center where scientifics and students study the tropical jungle.
This jungle is mainly composed of a primary forest and a secondary foliage cover. There are lots of paths that go deep into it so that you can hike to observe lots of palm tree species and giant trees full of long lianas, ferns, and primitive orchids. Undoubtedly, the incredible and exotic fauna that lives there (anteater bears, snakes, monkeys, frogs, jaguars, mountain lions, and more than 400 bird species) will turn your visit to Rara Avis into a unique experience.
If you are looking for something more exciting, Rara avis also offers lots of adventure activities such as rappel or hiking through the jungle to visit precious waterfalls and swim in the ponds formed under them.
If you want a complete experience in the jungle, you can even stay the night at a comfortable room there and enjoy the purest nature inside this virgin jungle.
