Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui is the biggest city of the canton. It is located in the beautiful Central Mountain Range and bordered by the Rio Sarapiqui. Even though it does not have the same amount of visits as other Costa Rican areas, lately, it has turned into an important tourist destination in the province of Heredia.

The city’s economy is mainly based on banana crops, and the majority of the workers go to the plantations by boat through the river, so the city has been established as a fluvial transport center. From there, it is possible to take one of the singular aquatic taxis that connect Rio San Juan with Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, and take tours to the impressive Tortuguero National Park and to Barra del Colorado to discover Costa Rica’s exotic and luxuriant nature.

For the most daredevils, Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui also offers an ample variety of adventure sports, above all aquatic sports, since its river is the best setting for this kind of sports. You can descend its rapids by rafting or kayaking; but there are also calmer areas where it is possible to enjoy a relaxing and romantic boat tour.

The nature that surrounds the city is in itself a great attraction and an ideal place for bird-watching. There are also some interesting butterfly farms that can be visited.

Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui has lots of services: hotels for every budget (even luxury resorts), huts, good restaurants, and bustling bars to have a wonderful time.
