Cano Negro is on the border with Nicaragua, in the province of Alajuela. It is a vast extension full of wild nature completely unspoilt by humans. Its distance from the country’s capital city and the main tourist centers turns this area into one of the least visited ones, so this is an ideal spot to leave the bustling cities behind and reconnect with nature.
Its worldwide biological importance makes it the world’s third most important wetland. Here, you will discover the fertility of the Costa Rican land and the abundant volume of water of the Rio Frio, and you will surely be impressed with the amount of wildlife of the park.
Going to Los Chiles or to Upala are the best ways to get there. Then, we recommend you to hire a guide; it is very advisable because the path that leads to the entrance of the park is unpaved and there is a high risk of getting lost if you go on your own. The park’s entrance is located 15.5 miles away from the southwest of Los Chiles, but there are also guided tours that start from San Jose and from La Fortuna.
The park houses a great biological diversity, so it is advisable, if you are not an expert, to hire a guide that will help you to localise and identify birds, mammals, fishes, etc.
Apart from the guided tours, the park also offers horseback rides, hiking tours, and canoe and boat trips on the immense lagoon that is located in the middle of the park, the Cano Negro Lagoon, which has an extension of approximately 1977 acres.
It is certainly the ideal place to discover and observe the Costa Rican species, orography, and singular geographic characteristics.
