Ciudad Quesada (also known as San Carlos) is the biggest city in the northern region of the province of Alajuela. It is located in the middle of one of Costa Rica’s most fertile areas.

Ciudad Quesada’s main economic activity is farming, mainly meat production (veal and beef) and milk production (cows). 65% of milk consumption in Costa Rica comes from this city. Once in a year, famous a cattle fair, as well as some horse shows, take place there.

One of the city’s main tourist attractions are its saddleries (shops where horseback riding equipment is sold), where it is possible to see artisan workshops where saddlery professionals carefully make these objects out of local leather.

In what you are looking for is just a bit of rest and relax, the ideal place for you is the Central Park, which is located at the city’s downtown. From its benches you could admire the main facade of the city’s church, a modernist building with an enormous statue of Jesus Christ. Is in this central area, the one that surrounds the park and the church, where the majority of the restaurants, shops and hotels are located.

San Carlos Arts and Crafts Market is located in the northern end of the Central Park. There you can buy diverse artisan objects made out of leather by the city’s artisans. This market follows Sarchí’s trading philosophy, but in a calmer way: there are fewer tourists.

If you want to visit Costa Rica’s agriculture center and also watch the interesting steps in leather objects production, do not hesitate to visit this quiet city in your visit to the north of Costa Rica.
