Atenas, in Alajuela province, is a small rural town surrounded by mountains and located at a historic carriage road that was used to transport coffee grains to Puntarenas. This village is considered to be an important agricultural center since it is surrounded by coffee crops. That is why a picturesque market takes place every friday morning in the town’s downtown, where it is possible to buy local fresh products, flowers and craftwork objects.
Atenas stands out due to its serenity and simplicity; it is a place where their inhabitants spend their spare time at Central Park and its surroundings. Central Park is the perfect place to rest under the shadow of its multiple hundred-year-old palm trees and mangos that shelter parrots that eat their fruits.
Atenas’ citizens are proud of having what is said to be “the best weather in the world”. You can corroborate it by simply walking along its streets while visiting its most symbolic spots, like the original Iglesia de las Mercedes Church, the sole example in Central America of a temple completely built on steel, or the Monument to the Oxherd, that welcomes the visitors and offers them a bit of Costa Rican history.
