One of the most singular markets of San José is the Mercado Borbón (Borbón Market) where you can find all kinds of fruits, natural coffee, “gallo pinto” and so on.
It is highly recommended that you stop in some of the “sodas” (food stalls) and have a snack, an empanada (a stuffed bread or pastry, baked or fried), or sandwiches of all kinds. Also, there are a huge number of urban peasants that sell their fresh products at a good price.
However, it is not recommended a visit after dark, because this point is called “red area” for being a significant spot for prostitution and thefts.
