Plaza de la Democracia is one of the most contemporary places of San José which was founded in 1989 for the celebration of the Hemispheric Summit. Plaza de la Democracia has become a reference for Costa Rican peace and freedom, where it is located the statue of Don Pepe, one of the most important political personalities of the country.
One of the main characteristics of the square is the structure that has many steps as if it was an Aztec pyramid. The colours of the steps create a contrast with the surrounding buildings where the strong yellow colour from the National Museum stands out. It is important to highlight the buildings around it like the Blue Castle or the Casa Rosada.
In addition, the square has green leafy areas and a large fountain which gives life to the large cement structure. The square is located between the Central Avenue and 2nd Avenue.
