The Museo Nacional de Costa Rica (Costa Rican National Museum) is one of the most diverse and complete ones of San José. It has become one of the most important cultural institutions of Costa Rica thanks to the research studies and the protection, conservation and promotion of the Costa Rican heritage that are carried out.
The museum has different research areas. It is important to stand out its natural history collection, which has more than twenty thousand specimens, its anthropology and archaeological collections with more than thirty thousand objects, and the Costa Rican historical exhibition that has a 33544-piece furniture collection.
The Costa Rican National Museum has many exhibitions, like the visual arts ones, the temporary collections, and the permanent exhibitions. The museum houses permanent exhibitions in different rooms such as the Indigenous Gold, the Colonial House, the Pre-Columbian, the South Osa Palmar, and the Puntarenas showrooms.
Since 1950, the museum stands between the Second Avenue and the Central Avenue at Democracia Plaza in the former Bellavista barrack, which is an attraction in itself with warm tones.
