One of the greatest attractions of San José is the Simón Bolívar Zoo, commonly known as Bolívar Park, which is also a great botanical garden.

The zoo is located in the famous Amón Neighbourhood (Barrio Amón). Its origin dates back to 1884 when the engineer, geologist, and botanist Henri Pittier created the Plant and Animal Garden. However, it was not until 1921 when it was opened by the name that still maintains today.

The Simón Bolívar Zoo Park stands out for the large biodiversity that it houses, therefore, you can contemplate numerous fish, reptile, amphibian, bird and mammal species. The latter are one of its biggest attractions, because these include the jaguar, the African lion, the margay, the sloth and many more.

During your visit, you can enjoy the big lagoon that the zoo has, a pond that is considered to be one of the few protected wetland areas in San José. It is characterised by its intense green colour that the huge number of tiny floating plants provokes, which is called Duckweeds. Besides, there is a large variety of plants and surprising animals living in the lagoon such as tree frogs, Grey herons and caimans.

You can also find the Santa Ana Historical Agricultural Museum inside the zoo which devotes part of its work to preserve and spread the cultural heritage of this area. Once there, you can see the historic buildings, photographs and artefacts with which they work to know how people lived on this lands.
