The Museo del Arte Costarricense (Costa Rican Art Museum) houses one of the widest and most important exhibitions of plastic art works in Costa Rica. It has more than six thousand different works, amongst which you can find national and international works, because the museum has temporary and seasonal exhibitions, besides their own one. These makes the Costa Rican Art Museum one of the most complete museums of Costa Rica.
The Costa Rican Art Museum is located in La Sabana Metropolitan Park, close to the León Cortés Statue. The museum is set up at what used to be the first international airport of Costa Rica. This building has been remodeled several times until becoming the current neo-colonial-style building, which space is divided in three areas: the Gold Hall, the Statues’ Garden and the exhibitions rooms.
It has excellent paintings: watercolour, photographic, and sculptural works, that are high value at national and international levels. One ought not to forget the Juan Manuel Sánchez collection.
The Costa Rican Art Museum has innovative dramatized guided tours, in which a group of actors immerses us into the 40s. They make use of music and costumes from this period to narrate the most important aspects and curiosities of the works and the building.
The Costa Rican Art Museum is surely one of the must-see museums in your visit to San José.
